Thrissur pooram




Thrissur Pooram
The Thrissur Pooram is commonly called “the Pooram of all Poorams”. This pooram is famous for massive participation of Peoples. It is the largest pooram festival in Kerala. It is celebrated in Thrissur at Vadakkumnadha Temple, situated on famous Thekkinkadu Maidhanam, a hillock right in the centre of city. It is celebrated in the month of April. Pooram is the most colorful festival of all other temple festivals of Kerala. It was belied that every year, all the gods and goddesses of neighboring temple met together for a day of celebration. 



The Pooram prgrammes extending 36 hours continuous, it attract a huge mass f people from the different places including international tourists. The pooram starts at the time of Kanimagalam Sasthavu Ezhunnullippu in the early morning and followed by the ezhunnullippu of other six temples. One of the major events in the Thrissur Pooram is Madathil Varavu. It is a pachavadhaym melam, partcipationg morethan 200 artists, consists of Thimila, Madhalam, Trumpet, Cymbal and Edakka (Different types of musical instruments.) The Pooram conducting mainly two devaswam – Thiruvambadi and Paramekkavu. At 2’o clock, inside the vadakkumnatha temple starts the famous Ilanjithara melam. It is a combination of different music instruments like drum, trumpet, pipe and cymbal.

Just two days before pooram, the pooram committee arranging a huge exhibition called Ana Chamaya Predarshanam. It is an exhibition of different type of elephant decorations. In the Pooram more than 50 elephants participating with nettippattam (Decorated golden headdress), strikingly craftedkolam, decorative bells, and ornaments, various colours of umbrallas, vechamaram and alavattom are awesome and it enrich the beauty of elephants and also Pooram.

At the end of the pooram, both Paramekavu and Thiruvambadi groups enter the temple through the western gate and come out through the southern gate and array themselves, face to face in distant places. The two groups in the presences of melam, exchange colorful and decorated umbrellas competitively at the top of the elephants. It is called Kudamattam, which is the eye catching attraction of the Pooram.



The pooram concluded with a spectacular fireworks display, which is held in the next day early morning after the pooram. The two groups, Thiruvambadi and paramekkavu competitively crack many innovative and charming fireworks, which make spectators going into reputers.

Pooram is participated and conducted by people breaking all barriers of religion and caste. The notable feature of the pooram is its secular nature. This Pooram upholding communal harmony and all people from different religion gives hands to hands to the success of Pooram.


The Thrissur Pooram is started two centuries back than the ruler of Cochin, Sakthan Thampuran (Raja Rama Varma) in 1798.
